Cane Corso Health Testing: OFA, PENNHIP, and Why It Matters
A Cane Corso should live 10-12 years without chronic pain. The difference between that and $8,000 in hip surgery usually comes down to one thing: health testing before breeding.
If a breeder can’t show you OFA or PENNHIP results, they’re gambling with your puppy’s future.
Why Cane Corso Health Testing Matters
Cane Corsos are large, fast-growing mastiffs. Hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease, and eye issues run in the breed.
“Vet checked” means nothing. A general vet can clear a puppy for parasites and vaccines, but only board-certified radiologists reading X-rays through OFA.org can clear hips and elbows.
Without testing, you’re buying a puppy with unknown genetics. That’s how families end up with a 2-year-old dog that can’t stand up.
OFA vs PENNHIP: What’s the Difference?
OFA Health Testing for Cane Corsos
OFA, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, is the US standard. At 24 months, dogs get X-rays scored by 3 board-certified radiologists.
Ratings you should see:
- Hips: Excellent, Good, Fair. Avoid Fair if you plan heavy activity.
- Elbows: Normal only. Anything else is a fail.
- Heart: Normal by cardiologist exam.
- Eyes: Normal by veterinary ophthalmologist.
Ask for the OFA certificate number. You can verify it free at OFA.org.
PENNHIP for Hip Laxity
PENNHIP is a more precise test for hip laxity. It uses a distraction X-ray to measure how loose the hip joint is. The score is a number, not a grade. Lower is better.
PENNHIP can be done at 16 weeks, so breeders can screen early. We use it alongside OFA for extra accuracy.

What We Test at Ruben Cane Corso Quest
Our dam Gia is tested through both systems before breeding:
- OFA Hips: Good
- OFA Elbows: Normal
- OFA Heart: Normal
- OFA Eyes: Normal
- PENNHIP: Certified
You can see the full certificates here: Gia’s OFA and PENNHIP proof.
We don’t breed any dog without passing scores on hips, elbows, heart, and eyes. That’s non-negotiable.
Red Flags in Cane Corso Health Testing
- “Parents are vet checked” – That’s not health testing. Ask for OFA numbers.
- Testing only at 12 months – OFA won’t certify until 24 months. Anything before that is preliminary.
- No public records – Real OFA results are public on OFA.org. If they won’t share the name or number, walk away.
- Testing only one parent – Both mom and dad need testing. Dysplasia comes from both sides.

Questions to Ask Any Cane Corso Breeder
Copy these 3 questions and send them:
- “Can you send OFA certificates for both parents?”
- “Are the results public on OFA.org? What’s the registration number?”
- “Do you offer a written genetic health guarantee?”
If they hesitate, you have your answer.
